You had a state-of-the-art underfloor heating system installed. Your bills are high, but your home never heats up as you want. The problem isn't the boiler or the pipes; the problem is most likely the flooring you chose.

The basic rule of physics is simple: Heat follows the path of least resistance. Standard thickness wood floors and cheap underlayments (foam) laid beneath them trap the heat. You end up heating the concrete layer beneath the flooring, not the room itself.
Who is the Champion of Heat Conduction?
If you use underfloor heating, you should have only one rule: "Choose material with low Thermal Resistance." According to EU standard EN 12524, the total thermal resistance of a floor covering should not exceed 0.15 m²K/W.
- 1SPC (Stone Plastic Composite): Thanks to the stone minerals it contains, it instantly transmits heat upwards. It doesn't expand when heated or shrink when cooled. Unarguably the most efficient flooring for underfloor heating. Thermal resistance value is typically between 0.04–0.06 m²K/W.
- 2Engineered Wood: If the feel of real wood is absolutely desired, engineered wood floors are more tolerant to heat than solid wood due to their layered structure. However, surface heat must never exceed 27°C, otherwise cracking begins.
- 3Ceramic and Porcelain: Provides excellent heat conduction but gives the coldest feel underfoot. Ideal for bathrooms, debatable for living rooms.
- 4Carpet: Absolutely incompatible with underfloor heating. Due to high thermal resistance, it completely traps energy, and some carpet adhesives may emit harmful gases when heated.
Underlay Selection: The Overlooked Detail
The acoustic underlay beneath the floor is also a critical factor. Foam underlays on the market provide excellent sound insulation but have high thermal resistance. In underfloor heated systems, always use thin, tightly woven acoustic underlays (usually IXPE or HPS foam) labeled "suitable for underfloor heating."
Post-Installation Commissioning Protocol
Do not immediately open the heating at full power on a newly laid floor. The recommended protocol for wood-based materials: Keep heat at 18°C for the first week, increasing by 1-2°C daily to reach target temperature over 7-10 days. This "heating commissioning" protocol allows the material to adapt to heat gradually and reduces the risk of cracking to zero.
When choosing flooring, don't just ask your seller for the color, ask "What is the thermal resistance of this material?" The right material choice will provide you not only a warm winter but also up to 30% energy savings every month.
